Your dad used photo filters before you did and he’s got the lens attachments to prove it. With a photographer’s first aide kit slung to his side, he rescued shots from mundane and made them majestic. He had acid trip color adjusters, light bending diffusers and UV defenders to make magic with. Then, in a dark room high off developer fumes, his augmented exposures were brought to life.

So hipsters, when you’re post applying digital filters to your instagram  shots, in hopes of achieving artsy gold, remember this…

Your dad was an artist of recalibrating reality first.

Of Education

How often were we told as children that we could be anything? That if we truly wanted, we could become doctors, lawyers, CEO’s - anything we dreamed of. Yet, how often is this truly a dream we hold onto throughout life?
For those of us fortunate enough to attend college, we know that hardly anyone even keeps their major throughout their college career. Many times, we find that what once was desired doesn’t really fit after further investigation. And for many, this change is deemed a failure, because we didn’t ‘get it right’ the first time.
But why is this failure? Maybe it’s not drive we lack, but knowlege of one’s self. Let’s face reality: not every kid was born to be a rocket scientist. It’s absurd to believe otherwise - many people have different strengths and weaknesses, (or rather, different characteristics, in order to remain objective of talents). It’s through difference, we find culture. Through comparison, genius is discovered.
We have accepted limitations; ADD, learning disabilities, physical limitations and the like. Yet being uncertain is seen as weak, lazy, or otherwise delinquent. It’s as though being wrong and following through with a wrong path is more acceptable than starting over and finding what you truly enjoy.
Maybe what we should be taught as kids instead is, “You can be whatever you want, but try everything first.” Because, it’s ok to not be sure; in fact, this author believes that to be preferable. To choose too soon is to deprive oneself of experience, whether it be love, a career, or even food.
For in the end, there’s no wrong answer, just a wrong situation for oneself. Why subject yourself to that kind of imprisonment? Choose instead to sit upon the fence, and enjoy the view above above everyone else’s head.
